What is a Lightweight Chain Apron Feeder?
A Lightweight Chain Apron Feeder, also called a light-duty apron feeder, is used to feed bulk materials from hoppers or storage bins to crushers, screens, belt conveyors, and other processing equipment. It uses chain-driven steel pans to transport material continuously and evenly, making it suitable for aggregate, building materials, recycling, and light mining applications.
The feeder features a compact structure, stable operation, and low maintenance requirements. The capacity ranges from 10–80 t/h, depending on material type and feeder specifications.
It is commonly used for handling limestone, sand, gravel, coal, construction waste, and other medium-sized bulk materials. Installed ahead of crushing or screening equipment, it helps maintain a steady material flow and supports continuous production.
Working Principle
The lightweight chain apron feeder uses a chain-driven apron structure to transport materials continuously from the hopper to downstream equipment at a controlled feed rate.
Material is discharged from the hopper onto the overlapping steel pans, where the load is carried by the chain assembly. The motor drives the reducer, which rotates the drive sprocket and pulls the chains and apron pans forward along the guide track. As the pans move, material is conveyed steadily toward the discharge end, ensuring continuous and uniform feeding.
Feed rate can be adjusted by changing the motor speed through a variable frequency drive (VFD) or by modifying the reducer output speed. After discharging, the empty apron pans return along the lower section of the feeder for the next cycle. A scraper installed near the return section removes residual material from the pans, reducing material carryback and improving operating cleanliness. The design is suitable for limestone, coal, sand, gravel, construction waste, and other medium-sized bulk materials.

Applications
Lightweight Chain Apron Feeder is designed for heavy-duty uninterrupted production feeding of large, abrasive and high-temperature materials. It delivers stable material flow from hopper to downstream equipment. Widely used in mining, metallurgy, cement and bulk material handling systems.

Chain Apron Feeder vs Other Feeders
Chain Apron Feeder is designed for heavy-duty, high-impact and large lump material handling. Compared with vibrating feeder and belt feeder, it offers much stronger load capacity, better impact resistance and wider material adaptability, especially in mining and crushing front-end feeding systems.

| Dimension | Chain Apron Feeder | Vibrating Feeder | Belt Feeder |
| Applicable Materials | up to 300–500°C depending on configuration, abrasive, sharp-edged ores | Medium/small particles, uniform feeding materials | Light load, small particles, powder materials |
| Max Capacity | Up to 3000 t/h heavy-duty models | ≤500 t/h | Up to several hundred t/h |
| Impact Resistance | Very high, supports single pieces up to tons | Medium, limited impact resistance | Low, easily damaged by sharp materials |
| Inclination Angle | 30°–50° | ≤10° | ≤18° (special design required) |
| Service Life | Chain & plates ≥20000 hours | Vibrator 10000–15000 hours | Belt 1–2 years typical replacement |
| Energy Consumption | High under load | Low | Low–medium |
How to Choose the Right Lightweight Chain Apron Feeder?
Selecting the right lightweight chain apron feeder depends on material conditions and production requirements. Feed size, bulk density, moisture content, and required capacity directly affect equipment selection. A mismatch in specification can lead to unstable feeding or unnecessary cost increase. The following are a few selection points:
- Material size: typically 50–300 mm for light-duty apron feeders
- Capacity requirement: common range 10–80 t/h depending on line output
- Feeder width: matched to hopper outlet and material flow volume
- Chain and pan strength: selected based on material impact and abrasiveness
- Installation space: layout between hopper, crusher, and conveyor
- Drive configuration: motor power and reducer type based on load condition

FAQs
What is a Lightweight Chain Apron Feeder used for?
A Lightweight Chain Apron Feeder is designed for continuous feeding of bulk materials to crushers, screens, and conveyors. It is commonly used in aggregate, mining, cement, and recycling plants where stable material flow is required.
What materials can a Lightweight Chain Apron Feeder handle?
It can handle limestone, coal, clay, sand, gravel, construction waste, and other bulk materials. The feeder is suitable for moderate-impact applications that do not require a heavy-duty apron feeder.
How is a Lightweight Chain Apron Feeder different from a Heavy-Duty Apron Feeder?
A lightweight model uses a lighter structure and lower installed power, making it more economical for medium-capacity applications. Heavy-duty apron feeders are typically used for larger rock sizes and higher impact loads.
What capacity range is available?
Depending on the model, feeding capacity typically ranges from 60 m³/h to 750 m³/h. Capacity selection depends on material density, feed size, and production requirements.
Can a Chain Apron Feeder handle wet or sticky materials?
Yes. The chain-driven design provides reliable material movement and performs well with moist, sticky, or irregular materials that may cause problems for conventional belt feeders.
How does a Chain Apron Feeder improve plant operation?
A steady feed rate helps prevent material surges, reduces equipment blockage, and keeps downstream crushers and conveyors operating more efficiently. Stable feeding also helps reduce unplanned downtime.
What factors should be considered when selecting a feeder?
Key factors include material type, maximum lump size, capacity requirement, feeding distance, installation space, and downstream equipment configuration. Proper selection helps ensure reliable long-term operation.
Does Zhongyi provide customized Chain Apron Feeders?
Yes. Zhongyi can customize feeder width, length, chain type, plate material, drive system, hopper structure, and control configuration based on project requirements and plant layout.
