What Is a Mining Jaw Crusher?

A Mining Jaw Crusher, also known as a Primary Jaw Crusher or Rock Jaw Crusher, is a heavy-duty crushing machine used as the first-stage crusher in mining, quarrying, and aggregate processing operations. It reduces large rocks, ores, and blasted materials into smaller, manageable sizes through the compressive force generated between a fixed jaw plate and a moving jaw plate.

As one of the most widely used primary crushers in the mining industry, a mining jaw crusher is designed to handle high-compressive-strength materials such as granite, basalt, iron ore, copper ore, and limestone. Its simple mechanical structure, large feed opening, high reduction ratio, and reliable performance make it suitable for continuous operation in demanding working environments.

Mining jaw crushers are commonly installed upstream of cone crushers, impact crushers, vibrating screens, and other processing equipment, forming the primary crushing section of complete stone crushing and ore processing plants. As the primary crusher in the crushing circuit, a mining jaw crusher reduces large feed material to the required size for downstream processing equipment, ensuring smooth material flow throughout the plant.

Jaw Crusher Working Principle

Jaw crusher is based on compressive crushing action between a fixed jaw plate and a movable jaw plate arranged in a V-shaped crushing chamber.

The motor drives the eccentric shaft, which through the pitman and toggle plate system causes the movable jaw to execute a reciprocating motion against the fixed jaw. This motion produces alternating opening and closing of the crushing chamber.

Feed material is introduced from the top of the chamber. As the movable jaw moves toward the fixed jaw, material is compressed, fractured, and broken under high pressure. When the movable jaw retreats, the crushed material moves downward by gravity into the lower chamber. The cycle repeats until the particle size is reduced below the discharge setting, after which the material is discharged from the bottom outlet.

Stone Finished Products

After primary and secondary crushing, jaw crusher-based production lines can produce a range of crushed stone products used in construction and infrastructure projects. Typical finished sizes include 0–5 mm fine aggregates, 5–10 mm and 10–20 mm crushed stone, as well as larger 20–40 mm base materials depending on the crushing and screening configuration.

The machine is widely used in concrete batching, asphalt mixing, road base construction and railway ballast applications.
